Screen Printing for Beginners
Students are invited to immerse themselves in a vibrant and experimental weekend inspired by the iconic work of Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. From Campbell’s Soup cans and Brillo boxes to celebrity portraits and repeated graphic imagery, this course explores the bold visual language and printmaking techniques that made Warhol one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
Throughout the weekend, students will gain hands-on experience in a range of screenprinting processes while developing an understanding of repetition, colour, layering, and composition. Participants will learn how to create and expose halftone imagery, transforming photographic references into printable dot patterns that emulate Warhol’s instantly recognisable aesthetic. Students will also experiment with painting directly onto screens, combining hand-drawn elements with photographic imagery to create unique and expressive prints.
The course encourages playful experimentation and creative risk-taking. By repeating a simple image and altering colour combinations, overlays, transparency, and painted interventions, students will discover how endless variations can emerge from a single source image. Participants will explore how subtle changes in colour and registration can dramatically shift the mood and impact of a print, reflecting Warhol’s fascination with mass production, celebrity culture, and consumer imagery.
Alongside technical instruction, students will develop confidence working within a professional print studio environment, learning how to prepare screens, mix inks, print multiple layers, and edition their work. The workshop supports both beginners and those with some printmaking experience, offering a dynamic and supportive environment in which to experiment, develop ideas, and produce a bold collection of prints inspired by one of Pop Art’s most celebrated figures.
During the course you will:
Gain confidence in setting up a screen, using a squeegee, and working hands-on with the studio’s screen-printing equipment
Learn which stencil-making techniques are best suited to different effects, textures, and imagery
Produce colourful and engaging prints from your own designs
